Spotlight Sunday - Tony Leathem

It's that time, folks! Today's spotlight is on baritone, Tony Leathem. Tony will be featured in the world premiere of The Faith Operas this April. You can also see Tony in the UConn Opera Theatre production of Le nozze di Figaro, March 24 & 26.

Anthony Leathem, bass-baritone, holds a Master of Music in Vocal Pedagogy from the New England Conservatory where he was the recipient of the prestigious John Moriarty Presidential Scholarship. Anthony is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance at the University of Connecticut studying under Dr. Constance Rock and is involved in the Voice and Opera program. Recent roles include Frank in UConn Opera Theatre’s production of Die Fledermaus, as well Dr. Dulcamara in L’Elisir d’Amore. This season, Mr. Leathem will be singing the roles of Captain Corcoran in UConn’s production of H.M.S. Pinafore, as well as the title role in Le nozze di Figaro. In November, he made his return to Hartford Opera Theatre to sing the role of Stanley in Liam Wade’s, The Stranger the Better for HOT’s New in November Festival.

I feel that “opera without borders” speaks to the unlimited communicative potential inherent to the genre. Through the music, drama, orchestra, voices, text, scenery, costumes, and lighting, opera provides the audience with a multitude of options in which to convey the story. It also gives professionals from different areas of stage and music the opportunity to take part in something larger than their chosen discipline, and contribute in a meaningful way. Whether they are the lighting designer, stage manager, a set builder, or musician in the orchestra, everyone involved is taking part in the communication of the story and music. It truly is an art form that brings people together.
